Hot cocoa is an absolute staple after coming inside after a snowy day. But with how many snow days that are bound to happen in the lovely season of December, there is going to be plenty of it going around. But it can be extremely irritating to continue buying store bought hot cocoa, and not to mention how expensive it can get. And I am going to share a solution to your seasonal holiday problem. Homemade hot cocoa! And not only that, but you can make it in pretty large batches to stretchacross massive amounts of snowy days.Stop buying pre-made hot cocoa mix and make your own with this easy, creamy, tasty homemade bulk hot cocoa recipe!

This is yet just another area that we are sharing to help you save money by making popular store-bought foods at home instead. This recipe was shared to us by a good friend – she makes this and shared her pictures and process with us to share with you!

We are going to share the classic recipe, but one benefit of making it yourself is that you can adjust ingredients to meet your health and dietary requirements. You can also add things to change the flavour of your cocoa if you wish. When you make your own, the sky’s the limit!

How to make homemade bulk hot cocoa:

  • 10 cups of dry milk
  • 1 and 3/4 cups of coffee creamer

  • 1 and 3/4 cups of cocoa
  • 5 cups of powdered sugar (or powder stevia for baking for a sugar alternative)

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir together to mix well. Put in a large airtight container. Label. Store in a cool, dry place. This will make about 50 servings of hot cocoa. Use within 6 to 8 months.

To make hot cocoa or hot chocolate:

  • Combine 1/3 cup of this mix with 3/4 cup of boiling/hot water.
  • Serve hot. 🙂

Also, we recommend printing this recipe for both the pre-made mix and the mix and taping it to your container so that you will be able to keep your container full of pre-made mix to remake and prepare cups of hot cocoa easily!

Make this homemade hot cocoa mix instead of buying the store mixes and make this for much less than store-bought.

Ingredients

  • Here's how to make your base mix:
  • 10 cups of dry milk
  • 1¾ cups of coffee creamer
  • 1¾ cups of cocoa
  • 5 cups of powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir together to mix well. Put in a large airtight container. Label. Store in a cool, dry place. Use within 6 to 8 months. Makes about 50 cup servings.
  2. To Make Hot Cocoa:
  3. Combine ⅓ cup of this mix with ¾ cup of boiling/hot water.
  4. Serve hot. 🙂

Notes

Modifications:
Use powdered stevia for cooking and baking for a natural sugar alternative.
Also, cacao powder is a super healthy form of a chocolate replacement to make it a super food too. 🙂

    I usually use Nestle’s Quik and make my hot chocolate with milk. Can I use this recipe and make my hot chocolate with milk? I’m not crazy about hot chocolate made with water. It wouldn’t let me leave five stars which is what I would give this idea.

      You are using powered milk so when you add water you are making milk

      I use a similar bulk recipe (much larger, I mix in a storage bin) and I use hot milk when I make mine, but it calls for hot water….it is fine either way. I use Quik, powdered milk, powdered sugar and Creamora.

    I put this mix together last weekend and it is half gone already. My family loves it. Instead of regular coffee creamer I used the Creamy Chocolate creamer I had on hand for an extra blast of chocolate flavor. Other flavors such as French vanilla, hazelnut, or the fun seasonal flavors could also be used. Thank you for sharing this recipe! I am sure that I will be making it again and again.

    I have used this recipe for years. I add a tsp of salt to it. It helps cut sweetness. Another addition is 2 tsp of Cinnamon. I give it away for Christmas. Family’s with kids love it..

      Do you use myfitnesspal? I like it because you can put your ingredients in (and create a recipe) and it gives you the nutritional content as long as it’s in their database. If not you can add it too. Love it
      There is an app or you can just go to the website.

    Boy does this bring back memories. In the mid 70s my best friends mother made this all the time for her 4 kids and their friends. It tasted better then anything bought in the store.

      I give this every Christmas. Put the marshmallows in a baggie if you don’t want them to get hard. Getting hard doesnt affect the taste, since they will be going in the hot chocolate. You might find snowman shaped marshmallows, I did last year. This mix is great in a mug, too, with a bag of mix filling the mug. You could even include a spoon with chocolate and crushed peppermint on it. Find the recipe on pintrist.

    You can add instant coffee granules for a mocha coffee drink. And sometimes I use flavored powder creamer (vanlla, hazelnut, etc) for a ‘gourmet’ hot chocolate. I’ve been making this for years…fill decorated mason jars and give as Christmas gifts! 😀

      No it’s not regular sugar. It is also called confectioners sugar or icing sugar.

      You can make your own powdered sugar by placing regular sugar in a blender and pulsing until fine.

      Hi. I know your question is old and you may have discovered a solution already, so this is just in case you haven’t, or if someone else needs help along these lines.

      Powdered coconut milk is apparently very good, and is readily available in places like amazon.com and thrivemarket.com. I have not used it before, because powdered milk does not seem to trigger my allergy*, but I suspect I would readily accept it.

      *Note: I am not lactose-intolerant. My allergy is related to the protein in milk, and causes me to overproduce phlegm in sinuses and chest.

      For those wondering what to use in place of coffee creamers: coconut oil might work for you. I have encountered many people who use it as coffee creamer. Powdered coconut milk might work in this instance, too.

    I really want to try out this recipe! I go through SO MUCH Hot cocoa mix! My only question is, how big of a container/canister would I need to store this? from the pictures and how many servings it makes it looks like it would be 3 gallons but I cant tell!

    I’m a diabetic, I use coconut sugar because it doesn’t raise my sugar. I can’t stand the other replacements. Coconut sugar you usethe same as regular sugar.

    I use this same recipe and it’s delish!!! The only thing I do different is I use Hershey’s Cocoa, and I add a tsp of salt to the mix when combining the ingredients. I love this and so does everyone I have given it to as gifts. I’ll never buy prepackaged hot chocolate. This tastes exactly like the cocoa I used to make on the stove top using the recipe on the side of the Hershey’s cocoa can. 5 STARS!!!!!!!!!

    I love this! Every year for Christmas I make a big batch of hot cocoa, virgin for the kids, then I drop some shots of Bailey’s or Rumchata into the cups for adults. Premade hot cocoa mix is so pricey, I might give this a try this year! Thanks for sharing!
